Garmin Dakota 20 Waterproof Hiking GPS Review

After losing a Garmin etrex vista hCX which I loved, I decided to go with the Dakota 20 (D20). I will be comparing the two in the review.

Maps and Storage:

The D20 comes loaded with a basemap, which has most major highways, but no streets. So for your purpose, you can choose City Navigator (required for auto navigation to work), or Topo 2008 (shows mountain countours & most lakes). Luckily, I had both Topo and City Nav on my computer.

Since the D20 comes with 850mb of internal memory, it's enough for self selected regions in Topo 2008 and/or Inland Lakes map, but not for City Nav. I put in a 4gb microSDHC card, which handled the 1.2gb .IMG file of the city navigator map. What might trouble some is that the D20 does not come with Mapsource(a great program for making custom maps, and upload trails and routes) or any kind of software. The hCX comes bundled with Mapsource. Although if you purchase the City Navigator, it comes with Mapsource.

When combining multiple maps onto the device, the D20 is much more convenient as you simply add the .IMG files (must have different file names) into the Garmin folder. D20 will automatically detect the maps and enable them. In the hCX, you had to merge all of the .IMG files into one or use seperate microSD cards, which was a toll. The D20 stores the saved tracks individually as .GPX files, whereas the hcx clumps all the trails into one file(named by date).

Auto Navigation:

I didn't find much info about Auto Navigation for the D20 before purchased, so I wasn't sure what to expect. After trying it a few times, it's definitely a step up from the hCX. There's an Automobile mode for navigation, where the map is tilted so you can see the turn coming from farther ahead. The directions text is noticeably smaller on the D20, which might be hard for some to read, but luckily you can adjust the text size of the directions. You can also customize what information you want to see (i.e-distance to destination, odometer, etc.). The D20 gives almost the same beep as the hCX when turns are approaching(no voice of course). The D20 navigation overall is more pleasing to the eye.

Battery Life:

The hCX wins on battery life 25 hrs vs 20 hours on the D20. There is a battery save mode on the D20 that definitely improves battery life. How it works is the screen will turn off in about 15 idle seconds to save power, and you simply touch the screen to see again. On D20's regular battery mode, I noticed the battery drains very quickly -definitely less than 20 hours. Recharcheable NiMH AA batteries are a must since you'll be going through them quickly. I use Sanyo Eneloop and Rayovac Hybrid. Be sure to change the Battery type under Setup>System to get the correct battery meter.

Visibility:

This has been the biggest complain by some, but I found the visibility/brightness on the D20 to be suitable for most types of lighting, including in the sun and in the dark. You can adjust the backlight (although brighter means less battery life). I'll admit it can be harder to see in certain angles of sunlight, but this hasn't been a problem during auto nav or regular use. The hCX is slightly brighter, but it's not a significant difference.

Accuracy:

During initial use, the satelites weren't detected on the D20. I had to walk outside before the Satelites could lock on. The D20 has three modes for Satellite: Normal, WAAS, and Demo. I've had the most accurate luck with WAAS as i'm assuming it's using the new satelite technology. On the D20 i've gotten accuracy as close as 10 ft, whereas on the hCX 20ft was usually the closest it would ever get. In general though, the satelite signal on the D20 is about the same as the hCX.

GPS Interface:

This is where the D20 far outshines the hCX. You navigate through all of the menus by touch. This is such a relief from using hCX's mini joystick and side buttons. What's nice about the D20 is you can move the map around by sliding your finger on it, whereas on the hCX joystick you have to sluggishly go at an angle. The D20 works much faster in operation. For example, it refreshes the maps considerably faster than the hCX. This equals less headaches when trying to pinpoint a location.

The layout on the D20 is very straight forward. The main menu contains all of the icons (Map, Where to, Track Manager, Setup, etc.) and you can scroll through all of the features by the arrows on the bottom corners. The hCX has a higher learning curve as you have to manipulate multiple buttons to get somewhere.

GPS Use:

I use the D20 for fitness activities: kayaking, jogging, cycling, and hiking. I can easily plot my map with distance and tracks(breadcrumb trails) onto websites that map .GPX files(Mapmyfitness, Motionbased). I use it too, of course, for auto navigation. The hCX is capable of doing all these things as well, but its not nearly as modern and simple as the D20. Resetting the track took me a few minutes to figure out, but it's simply Setup>Reset>Reset Trip Data. You have to use this command right before you go jogging, biking, rowing, etc. -otherwise your new track will mix in with the prior/current track. It'd be nice to have shortcuts on the D20, but no biggie.

Profiles and Customizing:

A nice feature on the D20 is the ability to create profiles. I have a profile for driving, and one for exercising. It keeps the settings and maps you want selected automatically saved into the profile (i.e- City Nav for auto, Topo for exercising). You can also rearrange or get rid of buttons in the main menu, specifically for each profile. This is extremely useful in having all the features you need in one or two screens. With the hCX, you can customize the features, although it is not nearly as simple to rearrange as the D20. The hCX does not have profiles.

Overall:

While it was quite unfortunate I dropped the hCX in the lake, the D20 has proven to be a suitable upgrade and replacement. The D20 and hCX both have their strengths and weaknesses, but i'm definitely enjoying the experience of the user friendly D20. I have yet to determine it's true ruggedness, but will post updates if anything else should be mentioned.

Product Feature

  • Ideal Stretch Perfect hamstring stretching without stressing your back
  • Previously known as the HamStretch, No need for a stretching partner
  • Keeps your knee straight during stretch
  • Stretches your calf and hamstring at the same time
  • Maintains proper hip orientation during hamstring stretches

Product Description

STRETCHING Don't OVER DO IT! Harder and faster will not get the results you want. The goal is to gain flexibility without causing injury. The correct way to stretch is in small increments. Be sure your leg muscles are warmed up before stretching. If you push yourself too far too fast, you risk serious injury.THE PASSIVE, STATIC STRETCHLie flat on the floor. With one knee bent, lift the other leg and put the stretcher in position. Straighten the leg first and then pull it towards the torso, gently and slowly. When you feen the hamstring tighten, or when you reach your current range of motion, stop and hold this position for 10 to 30 seconds. Switch from one leg to the other 3 to 5 times.THE ISOMETRIC STRETCHThe three basic steps to isometric stretching are:• actively lengthen the target muscle• isometrically contract the target muscle• actively lengthen the target muscle again.A muscle is more relaxed and able to lengthen after a strong isometric contraction. This readiness to lengthen is the result of the inverse stretch reflex. When one muscle contracts, the opposing muscle relaxes because of neurological inhibition, thereby allowing movement to occur around a joint.

Ideal Stretch Hamstring Stretching Device Review

..as mine are, this is a fantastic device. Normal hamstring stretches don't do a whole lot for me because I can never keep my ankle straight, and on my left leg which is tighter due to Cerebral Palsy, my knee never wants to stay down and always wants to veer or bend off to the right. I tried pulling my leg up using a belt or towel and while that works, I have very little directional control and it tires my hands quickly.

Not the case with this stretcher. I got my right leg almost vertical today which I've NEVER been able to do (though I've been leading up to it, to be fair), but the stretch was just more comfortable. Even with the left leg, I can keep the knee straight and stop it from veering. Well worth every penny!

LifeTrak Move C300 Heart Rate Monitor, Black Review

The LifeTrak Move C300 Heart Rate Monitor is a great supplemental equipment to aid and reach your goal of cardiac fitness and weight loss. My workout consists of cardio and weight training. And when doing my cardio, I always refer to my heart rate monitor to see if I have reached my desired heart rate objective and the calories I have burned.

The LifeTrak Move C300 Heart Rate Monitor provides an array of information: heart rate, calories burned, pedometer function, heart rate goal setting right on the sporty, rectangular screen. I really like the pedometer function of this watch. Since I have integrated fast-paced walking on my cardio, it proved very useful to tally and see if how far you have gone to reach your objective. There is no pedometer function in my old Omron HR-310.

The LifeTrak Move C300 Heart Rate Monitor has a user friendly interface and functionality that is easy to read and understand. I also like the reversible black/green rubber strap where you can wear it according to the color that suits you.

The Bluetooth functionality to sync to your smart device is a big plus. I have an android phone that I also use as an MP3 to listen to music while doing my workouts. Once connected to your device, you will be able to see and save your workout progress for future reference.

As far as accuracy is concerned, I feel that the LifeTrak Move C300 is somewhat accurate, +/- 1 point. I could see this when comparing to the equipment's onboard heart rate monitor. It will be off but not by a big figure. Since the LifeTrak Move C300 doesn't have a chest strap, the +/- 1 point accuracy is inevitable. Nevertheless, this is still a great heart rate monitor that will aid you in achieving results in your workouts.

DynaFlex Docking Station 12095 Power Starter for Gyro Wrist Exercisers Review

This little piece of cheapo plastic has the redeeming quality of
being able to turn Dynaflex's wrist concept from a frustrating
fumble into an actual exerciser. Sure, you can start a Dynaflex
by spinning the wheel with your thumb - and you can start
It with the little red string - about one time in ten! And by
then you (and any audience of children, etc.) have probably
lost interest. Not only does the Docking Station start your
Dynaflex - it starts it EVERY time (depending on you to keep
it going) AND it starts it for any 7-year old - who had previously
been denied. My only reason for withholding the 5th star is
that it isn't a solid, heavy, smooth piece of work.

Dynaflex Sports Pro Plus Gyro Wrist Exerciser Review

After owning this product I must say DO NOT BUY IT! For the same price you can buy an NSD powerball which has a REAL warranty with it. My ball broke and DynaFlex only tried to sell me a new one regardless of the warranty printed on the back. The Sports Authority felt bad enough they ended up replacing the ball free of charge while DynaFlex stated I either buy a new one or pay them to re-send my broken one back. I showed dynaflex a picture of how my unit broke BUT once they received it their opinion changed from "Axels can break when they are sped up too fast" to "the only way our axels break is to be dropped".

Here is as good as it gets, an entire post about this from the DynaFlex forum that DynaFlex removed before people could read it any further:

I just wanted to say I am bummed at this point. I tried a gyro at my friends house and loved the idea so I
bought my own. After a month it started emitting a high pitch sound at start up which would compare to a
bearing going bad and starting to squeak. A month later, today to be exact, I wrote into the company to ask
how the warranty works because the device is now having a much harder time starting and within a few hours I
hear a POP and the balls grinds to a halt. I see the ball has fallen away from the white track it lays in and think
it just fell out of it's track. Then a small piece comes out and the actual bearing inside the wheel broke. I really
like this device but if it's going to break down so quickly and a warranty has to take place often is it really
worth it in the long haul. If the white piece had broken (it looks plastic) I would understand but a metal like
piece breaking is weird right? Has anyone else experienced this? Is the NSD version any better for users who
are going to use this as regularly?

I think weve been speaking over email but I'll respond here as well. We'll inspect your ball so we can determine
what exactly is going on.
Though it is extremely rare for a ball to break so suddenly, it may happen. We do offer lifetime warrantys on
manufacture defects and we are honoring that with you by going through an inspection. But if it has broken
down there could be one reason one.
Your Forearm strength is too much for the gyro
This usually happens with a lot of rock climbers and other individuals with decent forearm strength. They get
the Pro or Pro Plus and a couple months later it busts on them. Thats because the basic Pro has a MAX capacity
of 25 lbs of force, or 12,000 RPMs. 12,000 isnt that hard to do for a fit individual. It could be that you wore the
sucker down and something busted because it doesnt have as high as a capacity as the Powerball or even our
Iron Power line.
In any case, we'll take a look at it and see what happened and most likely ship you out a brand new one.
-Joey

To WipeOut97:
I haven't had that problem. My pro just has a hard time starting up and i think i had it going on a year. The
NSD powerballs are pretty good. I own two and don't have much of a problem with them.
To Admin:
The site info bumped up all the RPMs for every powerball to 15K except for the Platinum Powerball which is at
15,500. In theory all of the plastic powerballs should be able to exceed 16,000rpms without busting the ball. So
what gives one dynaflex plastic powerball a higher capacity than the other?

Dstar,
We've been changing a few things in our website and some numbers are absolutely wrong. We stick to the
number 15,000-16,000 RPMS for the powerball. The Platinum has a little bit higher capacity so it can hit higher
RPM's and force, usually around 5 lbs more.
We should have the correct figures up soon.

My WipeOut97 account appears to have been blocked from posting on this forum but oh well.
Thanks for your reply here Joe, we did talk about this and I'm glad I was able to find the receipt.
Dstar,
With your Pro do you ever hear a high pitch squeel when you start it? When the high pitch started I noticed a
quick decline in the ability to get my ball started the first time. Between the two brands which one would you
prefer? If my strength is the issue do you think the NSD would hold up any better and do you think they offer
any advantage?
Thanks

Something was going on with the forum where I had to reset it, which I have, so your other username probably
works now. The forum is relatively new so we are working out all the kinks.
In regards to questions about NSD, both Dynaflex and NSD are very well made products and they likely have
the same amount of random defects we do. Key difference is they are in Ireland and we are in the US. Also,
Dynaflex is the original, we have been around since 1977 I believe.

In case anyone is wondering about my outcome. I spoke with Joe for a few days and DynaFlex has denied my
warranty based on their idea I dropped the ball. I posted a picture here prior to sending the unit in but once
the unit was received the story changed to: "The only way an axle breaks is in a ball drop". Well if that is the
case why did they not say the warranty was automatically denied? Instead I shipped them a ball and paid
roughly $4 to ship it to them. After being received Joe has only been trying to sell me more balls at a price
point to where it is a couple dollars below retail price. I have to now pay them to ship back my broken ball so I
can ship it to the sports authority where they are allegedly going to replace the ball for me.
Joe, you answered the differences between NSD and your company. What you have to take into account is NSD
has a lifetime warranty that goes beyond what you "deem" to be abuse of a product. They will repair any partof the device and ship it back at their cost regardless of what they feel happened. Your price point and NSD is
almost the same so I don't see how your products equal theirs. To me I feel dynaflex has a warranty written on
paper and that's it. I found a few people on the NSD boards with similar experiences of sending a ball in only to
be hit with a "I'll do you a favor and sell you another one" approach.
In the end I spent:
$22.99 dynaflex pro
$3.89 shipping to dynaflex (2 months after purchase)
$5 to mail a label to dynaflex for them to ship it back
$3.89 to ship it to sports authority
total of: $35.77
NSD with full lifetime warranty is: $32 shipped
Dynaflex offered (under their replacement plan):
another 14.95 for the gyro pro
16.95 for gyro +
18.95 for amber light up
Conclusion:
Buy from a company who backs their products such as NSD and stop trying to sell more products to customers
who are attempting to get warranty work done. As I said, why would anyone spend another dime with a
company after they have had issues with their current product? It simply makes no sense from a practical
standpoint.
